About the Film
In the Spring of 2017 Chicago actor and filmmaker Paul Traynor became an unlikely activist when he discovered that dark money and outside influence was being poured into a municipal election in his suburban Chicago community. He self-produced the documentary, “NEW TRIER: Tip of the Spear” in six weeks, which played to sold-out houses at a local movie theatre, quickly racked up 7,000+ views on YouTube, and helped get out the vote and rout the “independent” slate of candidates—which had ties to national conservative think-tanks, billionaire libertarians, and even Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner.
“DARK AGE: The Big Money Attack on Public Education,” will chronicle Paul’s journey to discover the root causes of this shadowy manipulation of local school board and community elections—a phenomenon that’s being repeated in rural and urban areas across the country. Through compelling visual graphics and personal interviews with parents, teachers, and experts in the field, Paul will expose the far-right’s efforts to bust unions, end diversity and cultural awareness education, and create fragmented “intellectual fiefdoms”, where facts become fungible and things like evolutionary and climate science are treated like unprovable theories. He’ll expose the vast network of heavily-organized conservative groups seeking to dismantle and privatize the public education system, generating huge private profits from public tax dollars. A network that has been growing and strengthening for decades, engineered by small cabal of billionaire oligarchs, which may adversely impact up to 144 million Americans—particularly the most poor and vulnerable. A network that threatens to pitch America into its very own dark age.
